[NI1222] Submitted by Mary Lineen Sergeant L.P. O'Connor VX15676 Leo Patrick O'Connor was born on July 17, 1910. He lived in Alvie and we nt to school locally. After leaving school he worked on the family farm b efore moving to Melbourne and working on the Victorian Railways. He w as a skilled footballer in his youth. In 1935, Leo and his sister Kay moved to Heidelberg to look after their fi ve nieces, the daughters of their sister Betty, while their mother w as in hospital for a year, just after the death of her husband. When K ay later married, Peg replaced her as carer. During this time Leo met t he Heffernan family who lived across the road. Frank and Nin (Mary) Heffe rnan and their children have remained lifelong friends of the O'Connor fam ily. When Betty and her daughters moved to Daylesford for health reasons in 193 8, Leo visited regularly, coming up every second weekend. He was very hel pful to them. Prior to the start of World War 11, Leo met his future life, Penny (Ber yl Stanislaus Pendergast), who was completing her nursing training with h is sister Peg, and Noreen (future wife of his brother Tom), at the Royal M elbourne Hospital. On the outbreak of the war he joined the AIF, 7th Division AASC. He attai ned the rank of sergeant and was a member of the famous Rats of Tobruk, se rving in various countries of the Middle East and in New Guinea. He wro te home regularly and sent home souvenirs of his travels. On April 27th, 1946 he married Penny at St. Mary's in Bairnsdale. Initial ly, they made their home in Albert Park, but also lived at various address es in East Melbourne. In about 1952, they obtained a war service lo an at 142 St. Vigeons Road, Reservoir. His brother Tom and his family liv ed across the road at number 129. Leo and Penny's first child, a son, was stillborn in about 1953. Peta Cat herine Maree was born in 1956 and Anna Elizabeth was born in 1957. The fa mily were founding parishioners of St. Stephen's, East Reservoir. Leo caught the train to work. He was a clerk in the Repatriation Departme nt until retiring due to ill health (TPI), towards the end of 1968. He di ed after a brief illness at the Austin Hospital, Heidelberg, on November 1 4th, 1970. Leo was a useful handyman and devoted family man. He often phoned his fam ily in Alvie from a public phone on Saturday night. He had a strong beli ef in his Catholic faith. He supported the Geelong Football Club, but to ok his entire family to the football finals at the MCG when he could. D ue to ill health he could not stand for long periods, but the MCG had seat ing.

[NI1227] Submitted by Mary Lineen Peg was born in 1913 at Colac. Her young years ans schooling was local. S he studied nursing at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and the nursing profes sion she loved then became a life long committment, She nurse privately a nd then many years were spent at Dr. Singleton's Clinic in Collingwood. S he never married, and came home to "Althone" to nurse Mollie through her f inal illness, and then cared for Jack after his stroke. In 1963 Peg and P at came to Colac to live. She was active in the work of the Catholic Wome n's League, and in pastoral care and fund raising for "Colanda". Peg esta blished great friendships with the clients whom she visited a couple of ti me a week. She cared for Pat in his final illness. She enjoyed a day at t he races, or barracking for her beloved "Cats" football team, and goi ng to Melbourne for the Ballet and stage shows, and also to visit treasur ed life-long friends.
